About Car Free Vancouver Society
Car Free Vancouver Society is a non-profit organization that has been transforming Vancouver streets into community spaces since 2004. What began as a grassroots festival on Commercial Drive organized by founders Matt Hern and Camren Mills has grown into one of Vancouver’s most beloved annual traditions, now welcoming hundreds of thousands of participants each year.
The organization’s mission extends far beyond just closing streets to traffic. They’re passionate about reducing congestion, promoting zero waste, encouraging active transportation, and creating genuine community connections. Their festivals follow core values of celebrating and supporting local communities, protecting the environment, and fostering diversity and inclusivity throughout accessible, car-free spaces.
The impact has been remarkable since that first event in 2004, which drew over 25,000 people to Commercial Drive with the help of 30 main organizers and roughly 300 volunteers. The festivals expanded in 2008 to include Main Street, West End, and Kits Block Parties, proving that Vancouver was hungry for these community-centered celebrations.
Getting There Sustainably
In keeping with the car-free mission, festival-goers are encouraged to walk, cycle, car-share, or use public transit to attend both events. Commercial Drive and Main Street are both easily accessible by Vancouver’s transit system, with Main Street perfectly served by the Canada Line and extensive bike lane networks.
Join the Celebration
These events represent everything we love about Vancouver – community spirit, support for local businesses, environmental consciousness, and incredible food bringing people together. Whether you’re discovering new flavors from our food truck partners or simply enjoying the unique atmosphere of car-free streets, Car Free Days offer something special for everyone.
Mark your calendars for September 6 on Commercial Drive and September 14 on Main Street. Come hungry, come curious, and come ready to celebrate what makes Vancouver’s neighborhoods so extraordinary.
